Whether it’s the fascination of the wind taking a form to
the sky, the incredible sight of a giant floating ship amongst the clouds, or
simply the chorus lines of a Mary Poppins song echoing through your childhood
memory, there is a nostalgic beauty in watching kites play in the wind.
The Cape Town International Kite Festival (Africa’s largest
kite festival) is held annually on the lawns surrounding Zandvlei in Muizenberg
and attracts over 20,000 visitors a year. Created to assist in driving
awareness around mental health issues and assist in raising money for Cape Mental
Health to offer a high level of assistance and service to those in need.
It’s not uncommon to be stopped in your tracks by a giant
cartoon bear, a group of babushka figures or a curving, elegant snakelike form.
The festival offers a chance to fly kites, to view kites and, of course, to
make kites – making it a great day out of with children if the blustery spring
weather is putting the nerves to the test!
