An avid traveller, even The Travelling Goldfish could not
contain excitement as the plane left-turned and headed down towards the city
formerly known as Byzantium and Constantinople, nestled in the bridged waters
of two continents (Europe and Asia).
Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey (and second largest
in the world) and principal seaport for the country - a historical, economic
and cultural hub filled with a curious mix of the old and the new. From the overwhelming busy streets during
rush-hour (leave extra time for the airport) to the glamorous playground on the
Bosphorus, Istanbul is an overwhelming sensory experience.
The city offers an incredible mix of excitement : exhaustive
trading in The Grand Bazaar (turkish delight, designer handbags and beautiful
glass and ceramic crafts anyone?), the busy solitude of visiting ancient
mosques and holy place amidst a sea of strangers and tourists, a boat tour
along the Bosphorus in the velvet night to see the modern lights of the
transcontinental bridge and the shimmering perfection of an early afternoon
lunch looking out over the incredible views.
This city, the only city on two continents, with a
soundtrack of morning prayers as sea birds lift into the air, is a thoroughly
unique experience and one day The Travelling Goldfish will return to dip into
the golden dreams of a vast history.
