We Are One | Grand Parade, Cape Town, South Africa | March 2013

An array of white-dressed, sunglass clad figures all clutching Ziploc bag covered cameras and phones. Table Mountain, solid, brilliant in the afternoon light, the perfect all-South-African backdrop for such a “first.”

The air filled in an instant with coloured powder, crazy happy dancing vibes and eventually everyone is the same ochre-dust orange-brown in clothes that will never recover.

And, of course, we have a host of new friendships.
This was our favourite photo from the official facebook page

Let’s Go Fly A Kite | Zandvlei, Muizenberg, Cape Town, South Africa | November 2012

Whether it’s the fascination of the wind taking a form to the sky, the incredible sight of a giant floating ship amongst the clouds, or simply the chorus lines of a Mary Poppins song echoing through your childhood memory, there is a nostalgic beauty in watching kites play in the wind.

The Cape Town International Kite Festival (Africa’s largest kite festival) is held annually on the lawns surrounding Zandvlei in Muizenberg and attracts over 20,000 visitors a year. Created to assist in driving awareness around mental health issues and assist in raising money for Cape Mental Health to offer a high level of assistance and service to those in need.

It’s not uncommon to be stopped in your tracks by a giant cartoon bear, a group of babushka figures or a curving, elegant snakelike form. The festival offers a chance to fly kites, to view kites and, of course, to make kites – making it a great day out of with children if the blustery spring weather is putting the nerves to the test!

The Blue Mosque, The Bluer Sea and the Bluest Sky | Istanbul, Turkey | September 2011

An avid traveller, even The Travelling Goldfish could not contain excitement as the plane left-turned and headed down towards the city formerly known as Byzantium and Constantinople, nestled in the bridged waters of two continents (Europe and Asia).

Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey (and second largest in the world) and principal seaport for the country - a historical, economic and cultural hub filled with a curious mix of the old and the new.  From the overwhelming busy streets during rush-hour (leave extra time for the airport) to the glamorous playground on the Bosphorus, Istanbul is an overwhelming sensory experience.

The city offers an incredible mix of excitement : exhaustive trading in The Grand Bazaar (turkish delight, designer handbags and beautiful glass and ceramic crafts anyone?), the busy solitude of visiting ancient mosques and holy place amidst a sea of strangers and tourists, a boat tour along the Bosphorus in the velvet night to see the modern lights of the transcontinental bridge and the shimmering perfection of an early afternoon lunch looking out over the incredible views.

This city, the only city on two continents, with a soundtrack of morning prayers as sea birds lift into the air, is a thoroughly unique experience and one day The Travelling Goldfish will return to dip into the golden dreams of a vast history.

A City Farm | Oranjezicht City Farm, Cape Town | 02 November 2013

The sun is shining, the wind shaking the leaves slightly, created moving dappled shade across green lawns and ancient white walls. There are small children, lots of Instagram-ready cameras and every size of dog mixing in-between the variety of shoppers, visitors and amblers at the City Farm Market.

Started in 2012, Oranjezicht City Farm (OZCF) is a neighbourhood non-profit project celebrating local food, culture and community. The Farm celebrated a year of sharing a unique type of beauty, information and skills development this November  - highlighted by a large, decorative Charley’s Bakery cake made especially for the occasion and cut by Helen Zille. The beautifully laid out farm offers plenty of locations for relaxed picnics, scenic city and mountain views and chances to meet new and old friends.

From their Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/OZCFarm

The Oranjezicht City Farm is a community of adults and younger folk working together to engage in small-scale food production in the City Bowl of Cape Town.

The Oranjezicht City Farm is located on the central part of the original farm, ‘Oranje Zigt’, established in Cape Town, South Africa in 1709, and which became the largest farm in the Upper Table Valley in the 19th century. Fed by a cluster of springs that provided perennial fresh water to Khoekhoen pastoralists as well as to sailors and the Company’s Gardens from the 17th century, this farm grew vegetables and fruit that fed the growing settlement and colony and supplied passing ships with essential produce to the turn of the 20th century. Swallowed by urban expansion, the productive farmlands were converted to a housing syndicate in 1901 and the original homestead standing on the site was demolished in 1957 to construct a bowling green, which fell into disuse and neglect in recent decades.

OZCF seeks to re-connect the Oranjezicht neighbourhood and the rest of Cape Town to this neglected piece of heritage through design, gardening activity and outreach, and to use it as a catalyst to build social cohesion across communities, to develop skills among the unemployed, to educate residents and their children and others about food, environmental and related issues, to beautify public space and to champion unused or under-utilised green spaces in the City Bowl.

Every Saturday in Homestead Park (adjacent to the Farm) in Upper Orange Street, Oranjezicht, OZCF holds a community farmers-style market for independent local farmers and artisanal food producers. You can alternate between choosing delicious local foodstuffs, doing your weekly (healthier and cheaper) veggie shopping or just being inspired by the setting and purchasing some of your own gardening goodies (including seedlings).

It really is something to see, to experience and to get involved in. There is so much beauty in the world, don’t let the opportunity to engage in it, celebrate it and contribute to it slip past.

P.S. A Travelling Goldfish favourite? The delicious gelato pops by Remo sold at the market (usually the corner near the coffee), the interesting O’ways Bao Buns and the fact that you can utilise the CitiBus to visit – saving on fuel and parking hassles!

A small intimate venue that allows you to absorb every particle of the music around you, Mahogany Room in Buitenkant Street was home on Thursday evening to Cape Town band We Set Sail. The famous jazz lounge was one of the final shows of their SA tour for their album ‘something about the moon.’

Postberg Flower Season | West Coast National Park, South Africa | September 2013

Every spring the Postberg National Park in the Western Cape becomes a carpet of multi-coloured blossoms as thousands of petals open to the still-chilly air and the determined spring sunshine.

Postberg National Park (famous for the annually blooming spring flowers and antelope) forms part of the West Coast National Park, a spectacular piece of scenic beauty that includes the beautiful blue waters of Langebaan Lagoon which is where, as the park themselves put it, “thousands of seabirds roost on sheltered islands, pristine golden beaches stretch endlessly into the early morning mist and brooding salt marshes are home to cast concentrations of migrant waders from the northern hemisphere.”

Usually SAN Parks offer a SAN Parks week in September, where members of the South African public can visit National Parks for free but even without this the cost is a mere R56 per adult . For more detailed information visit their website (www.sanparks.org), like their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/pages/SANParks-West-Coast-National-Park/264629663581112 ) or follow them on Twitter (@SANParks or @WestCoastNP).

A visit to the park can include not just a driving or walking tour through the Postberg flowers, but also a visit to one of the scenic beaches which highlight the secluded beauty of this special part of the world. Share your time with idyllic nature, wild fragrance on the gentle breeze, slow moving tortoises and, if you’re lucky, amongst the purple abundance of flowers, you may just see some grazing antelope.
